I'm On A Boat

SteamboatLake.JPGFor the second time, I painted on a boat. Last week, Kate and I took our summer vacation in Steamboat Springs, CO. We met her parents up there and one day rented a pontoon boat. We rented it at the Steamboat Lake State Park, which is a great deal and Kate had to make the reservation well in advance of our trip. I sat at the helm and painted away while Kate's dad Bill maneuvered the boat so that I somewhat kept the view. Kate and her mom Judy grilled brats and we all enjoyed a day in the sun at 70 degrees.

That is, until the storm clouds came up. At that point, I finished up quickly and we headed back to shore about 45 minutes before our rental time was up. The weather in Colorado this time of year is mostly perfect. Around 70 degrees during the day, zero humidity, and cool nights. The only problem is that you have to dodge storms most every afternoon. More on this later.

Live Free or Grisaille

When I first visited Boston for work, some of the Bostonians would sarcastically remark that people from New Hampshire were bumpkins and mock their slogan "Live Free or Die". When I heard this, I immediately felt a warm connection with the Granite State since I'm from the country and have a strong independent streak. This was connection was validated during two wonderful visits to Manchester this this year. NH is a beautiful place and has a tremendous amount of pride in its role in the American Revolution.

Telephone Factory Art Show 2008

Last Sunday wrapped up the TFAS 2008 (www.thetelephonefactoryartshow.com). Many thanks to Judge, Grant and Michelle for their hard work making it happen. Also thanks to the Fireball Collective (www.fireballcollective.com) for participating in the show with us. Also thanks to Kate for the wonderful food and to all my friends that stopped in to support the show. We had a blast and I sold several pieces.

New Colors

It is great to be back in the South for the Fall. Autumn is spectacular in the Blue Ridge mountains, and the first signs of it were on display last weekend in north Georgia. I painted near Neel's Gap along a hike that is an approach trail for the AT.  Then yesterday I had the opportunity to paint in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. I was in Knoxville, TN for my cousin's wedding (Congrats Derrick and Lauren!). Kate and I spent the morning before the wedding visiting the countryside. We stopped at one of the overlooks and I did my first painting in Tennessee.

Carry Me Back

Anyone who has spent more than 10 minutes with me knows that I was raised in Alabama and spent most of my adult like (so far) in Texas. However, many people may not realize that I was actually born in Newport News, VA. I only spent the first year of my life there, and other than a trip in grade school to see where I was borned, Virginia really hasn't held any relevance for me.  However, that changed for me this past weekend, as I went out camping for a couple of nights at Shenandoah National Park. Just amazing scenery.

Beach Baby

This past weekend, I hit the beach at Sanibel Island, FL. I was there with Kate and her family, and they were all very supportive in letting me paint while they soaked up rays. Kate knew about this spot at the tip of the island with a lighthouse, and her talent for good painting spots helped me out again. This painting marks a few firsts for me - first time painting on a beach and the first time painting without my shirt on.

Hue, Value, Chroma, Tent

I feel more integrated with the landscape when I spend the night out in the woods. I'm very happy that I've added camping to my painting trips. You do have to pay careful attention to the sounds at night when in the mountains of North Georgia: A snake rattle. A bear rustling. Banjo music. But with proper preparation, the experience is very rewarding. This past weekend, my girlfriend Kate, my bluetick hound Illy and I spent Saturday night under the stars at Unicoi State Park. The Georgia State Park system is very good and Unicoi is the nicest state park I've visited so far.

Pasture Eyes

I love a good pasture. Sometimes, when stompin' around north Georgia it can be tough to find painting scenes. There are awesome views, however there are also a lot of trees in the way. In addition, many good views are on private property. Many of those post signs that say "Beware of Dog" or "Beware of Dale and his 12 Gauge". I went up to Amicalola Falls State Park a week ago and found one view I really liked at a nearby farm. It had a sign by it that said "Buck's Corn Maze" and I saw a truck leaving the house next to it.
