NightBldg.jpg This weekend I'll be exhibiting in the 16th Annual Telephone Factory Art Show. This will be my fourth time participating in this event, and once again I'll be in our friend Sunny's loft 102. Joining me will be artist Amy Prasad and potter Lori Buff, and Kate will once again provide the snacks.

It's Here!

Phoenix.jpgHohokam.jpgI'm so excited that Spring has finally arrived.  I like all the seasons, and I love to paint snow, but I much prefer to paint the awesome new greens and assortment of wildflowers that we will see in a few weeks. I am also looking forward to more opportunities to go camping, hiking and expanded day light hours.

To get a head start on the season each year, my uncle Andrew Oppmann and I attend Major League Baseball's Spring Training. We rotate between the camps in both Arizona and Florida. I don't follow baseball as closely as I used to, so for me it is mainly a long weekend of sitting outside and drinking beer. This was our 17th trip, and were accompanied by my father-In-law Bill Cummings, and our friends Andy Rubin and David Batten.

This year I decided to paint one of the parks we visited, something I now plan to do each year. I chose the Cubs' Hohokam Park, which has been recently renovated. Andrew joined me and we found a spot outside the outfield fence. Getting a view into the park wasn't as easy as I thought, but what I found was better than a scene of the outside of the stadium. Hohokam is nice, but it isn't as scenic as the Rose Bowl.

On the blog is the painting with some touch-ups via Photoshop that will be similar to some adjustments I plan to make on the original (in oils) this weekend. I'll show the finished piece in a week or so. Much like my Rose Bowl painting, I really enjoyed watching the preparation of the day from those putting on the game. When I paint landscapes, I strive to express what it is like to be there, in the moment, and doing so with an event such as a ballgame makes it even more immediate.

After the rest of the crew departed for the airport, I went up to South Mountain Regional Park. It was nice to paint a nature park, which I'm more used to, after the challenge of a ball park. South Mountain claims to be the largest municipal park in the country, and it is only about ten miles from the Phoenix airport. This was mighty convenient for me, as I dropped off Andrew and Andy at the terminal early on Tuesday, then headed there. I quickly found a great trail (The National Trail), hiked a bit, then did this piece. In the distant valley is downtown Phoenix. I plan to do a few more modifications to this piece also this weekend, but not much. I just want to tweak a few cacti, and I have to remove some debris that got on the painting when I was travelling.

So after a great weekend of friends, sports and a great painting hike, I returned to Atlanta and I'm ready for the warm weather to stay a bit longer than it did this weekend. I'm really looking forward to getting back up into the hills on North Georgia this year.

Countdown to the Show

maine2.jpgThe show is next weekend, and I've just finished reorganizing my prices and online offerings based on the print run I'm going to do next week. This piece, Seal Harbor, will be featured in my first oversized print - a 22x28 giclee. It is also available as a 11x14 canvas giclee, 11x14 giclee on watercolor paper and notecards. I did this piece during a wonderful trip to Acadia National Park a few years ago.

Get On Up In Here!

This last week I've been getting ready for the big show 12/5 and 12/6. Mainly, I took a bunch of paintings off to Digital Arts Studio to be scanned with their Star Wars-y scanner. I'll have an assortment of prints and notecards available at the show, and other pieces will be available to ship within 2 business days. I ordered new display grid walls that I have to pick up next week, and I also will need to do some fast framing when I get the paintings back from Digital Arts Studio. So the next few weeks will be busy. This is going to be a great show, and I hope you can make it.

Also, be sure to sign up for the newsletter. I am going to make a few 'subscriber only' prints/notecards and at a special rate for you that have been kind enough to share me your email.

Gimme Shelter

Mother Nature really doesn't think much about painters. It is as if her astounding beauty is worth all the crap she can throw at you as you try to enjoy it. As I've written in several posts, she likes to present all kind of obstacles to you when you paint. As if painting wasn't challenging enough. Well, I got the best of her this week. I'm getting married in June at really cool antebellum mansion turned B&B called Madison Oaks in Madison, GA. In conjunction with the event, I'm going to do several paintings of the place.

In A Lone Star State

On March 6th, I went back to the scene of the crime. Yes, I went back to Dallas for a weekend visit. It was too quick, but I packed a lot of great things in. First, I met up with several folks from the old gang at Sal's. Back when Dave Brown and Steve Armes hosted the infamous Friday Night Group at Synapse Studios, we ate at Sal's every Friday night after the drawings session. The first time I visited the group, way back in 1996, we went to Sal's. And again 9 out of 10 Fridays for the next decade. So it was the perfect way to start out my reunion tour.

Eauxil Painting

Right now I'm in the Big Easy and I spent the last day of 2008 painting at the Barataria Preserve. The preserve is part of the Jean Lafitte National Historic Park, just south of New Orleans. I started the day with a serene and peaceful hike through the swamp and finished it with this painting of a very interesting old tree on a mound called a midden. If you have been reading my posts for a while, you will sometimes read about the challenges of plein air painting. Unlike the studio, painting outdoors often makes demands of the artist beyond just the painting itself.

Live Free or Grisaille

When I first visited Boston for work, some of the Bostonians would sarcastically remark that people from New Hampshire were bumpkins and mock their slogan "Live Free or Die". When I heard this, I immediately felt a warm connection with the Granite State since I'm from the country and have a strong independent streak. This was connection was validated during two wonderful visits to Manchester this this year. NH is a beautiful place and has a tremendous amount of pride in its role in the American Revolution.

Merrimac Christmas

Ho, ho, ho! For the second year in a row, I spent the day painting in the cold plein air. It felt just like a holiday from the movies as I was painting the Merrimac River in Manchester, NH. I was standing in the back of The Millyard, a converted old factory. Standing alongside the main river in southern New Hampshire, I was able to soak in the prototypical New England town. I got to hear a lot of the local accent, as my easel was set up in a smoking area for those that work at businesses in The Millyard.
