Jennifer, I also really like I'll Fly Away. We finished Sunday's big service (~80 folks I think) with that one by request, and it was rocking. You would've loved it.
Kathy, I'm glad I was able to channel some Rufus Harris for you.
Hey! Wonderful to see you playing the banjo ! As for Church songs, I love the I will Fly Away- It is one of my favorite songs in church. I can remember sitting with grandmother singing that on Sunday mornings. What good times those were! Singing was always my favorite time of the church service as a child. Thank you for sharing and bringing back some good ol' memories. Grandmother would be proud of you.
Thanks so much for posting this! That song brings back wonderful memories of my childhood days, sitting in the Monterey Church of Christ. Rufus Harris was the song leader...and listening to this, I believe he still lives! This is a great rendition of the song!
Great to hear from you Marc! It has been great to see what you've been drawing and painting in Montreal, and I love your articles in Imagine FX.
It was a neat coincidence that I painted during the super moon, but I do plan to live long enough to paint a few more super moons. Now that I know what they are, I'll be on the look out. Believe me, 12% more illumination is quite handy when you are doing a nocturnal in the woods. The hardest part was painting while my body was becoming covered in hair and my hands turned into claws.
Wow! Look at all that orange. It might be one of my favorites now. Looks like that was painstaking work...I really sense the three dimensions thanks to the great work on the trees and shadows
This reminds me of my grandparents farm in Attalla? Where is this farm? Thought about the time you had to drive me home from t-town one weekend-20 years ago!
I think he paints quickly in the field to catch the colors and effect he is looking for. Plus, he is plain fast. I doubt his studio methods would vary too much, he would just have the luxury of going back over them, especially in a digital medium. I'll ask next time I talk to him.
Jie's work for Disney is such a departure from his plein air work. I recommend to anyone who hasn't looked at his website to do so. The work of artists like Jie are responsible for the amazing transformation of backgrounds in animation today.
Does he paint quickly in the field because his studio work requires so much detail and precision?
Thanks! We actually got to the BCS game around 6am for my brother to stand in line for his tickets. Seating was assigned first come, first served. So Dad and I took a nap in the car, then I got up, did this painting, then put on my '31 Rose Bowl uniform and started tailgating. The best part is that Rose Bowl parking is no problem at 6am.
Yes... there are several drawings in this collection from the time we spent together at Don's studio. It was my time in Dallas and the people there that opened up a whole new world of creativity for me. In many ways I may never have done this book if I hadn't lived there.
Watching Don create this Spring Training painting was fun, for sure. But it was as amazing to see people, all random strangers, come up him and his painting gear and really, truly get into the art. Don was very, very patient with all of the "typical" questions (most among them: Whatcha doing?) and allowed them to live in that moment with him. Each got a business card with this URL and an invitation to visit and view the painting in its finished form. I must confess that this was a moving experience for me, as Don's love of art and the enthusiasm he brings to these opportunities is infectious. Proud of him. Proud of this painting. --- Andrew

Hah! That's cool you went out for the moon! That's the paint out of a lifetime:) - Good choice!
Man I've listened to that little piece about ten times by now. You're making me want to learn.
Glad you picked up on my nod to your favorite singer.
I thought it was pretty cool, too, Don. I got paints and I'm ready to go (next year)!
That's pretty cool!
Thanks Joe! I figured you'd like an orange painting.

I'll see if I can paint Joe over Thanksgiving weekend. Thanks for the nice comment.
Maybe I can get to Austin and do a painting of Memorial Stadium someday.
This picture reminds me of Joe fishing. Very nice!
Good stuff Don. Always impressed with your artwork.

Love it Don! When did you find time in CA to do this??? Can't wait for 2010! See ya this weekend.
Site is AWESOME. Very inspiring!

Hey! I wonder if any of them were done in your old place! That would be awesome :) Makes it a special collectors item for us!
That weekend has me wanting to spend of few more just like it. This painting is a beauty!
